Who is the low-nickel product list intended for?

This list is intended for individuals who have been diagnosed with a nickel allergy through allergy patch testing. Nickel allergy manifests itself through localized contact dermatitis and gastrointestinal symptoms following contact with a product containing nickel.

To make it easier to follow the diet, we have created a list of such products, which may change over the coming months and years depending on new scientific reports.

Symptoms of nickel allergy

  • well-demarcated from the rest of the body, erythematous, papular eczematous plaque at the site of contact with nickel

  • in the acute stage, blisters and oozing may occur

  • skin rash

  • itching and intense itching

  • lichenification, i.e. inflammatory thickening of the skin

What foods contain nickel?

Nickel is found primarily in plant-based products. However, this doesn't mean it can't be found in animal products. People with allergies should avoid foods high in this metal, such as cocoa, chocolate, oatmeal, various nuts, and legumes. Dairy products, fruit, and meat, among others, contain low levels of nickel.

Nickel is a ubiquitous metal found in the Earth's core, as well as in soil, water, and air. Metal alloys containing nickel are common in most industrialized countries and can be found in everyday items such as jewelry, watchbands, belt buckles, clasps, and coins. Nickel allergy is the most common metal allergy and the most common contact allergen.

How was this product table created?

The following list is based on scientific research on nickel-rich foods, the consumption of which may cause respiratory, digestive, and skin symptoms. However, remember to monitor your well-being and individual reactions.

Appropriate dishes, cutlery and packaging

Nickel is found not only in food but also in everyday products, soil, and water. If you have a nickel allergy, you should use the following utensils:

  • Ceramic products

  • Melamine tableware

  • Cutlery and tableware made of precious metals

It is also important to thoroughly wash vegetables and fruits, which may contain nickel on their surface from the soil and/or fertilizers.
